Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities with the Columbian Park Zoo. Volunteers provide valuable support and assistance to zoo staff and have an integral role in the success of our special events. Join our flock and spend some quality time enhancing the lives of the Zoo animals, building skills, and developing community connections!  Adults age 18 and older may apply for an Adult Volunteer Position.  Please follow the link below to apply!

Volunteer Program Overview

Once applications are received, selected candidates will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule a time to complete a background check (with a state issued photo ID) in person at the Zoo before your application is considered complete. If accepted into the program, you will be invited to a Volunteer Orientation session, after which you can begin your time at the Zoo!

Orientation sessions take place seasonally in the Spring (February, March, April) and Fall (September, October, November), typically one weekend afternoon at the beginning of the month. Adults may apply for a volunteer position any time but may have a delay in starting if outside of the Spring or Fall seasons.

Adult volunteers are expected to complete one 3-hour work shift per week. A regular shift time will be determined based upon your availability and the needs of the Zoo. Shifts are available morning or afternoon, 7 days a week, although there is a high demand for weekend shifts. Volunteers with weekday availability are strongly encouraged to apply! Due to the training required to be an effective volunteer, a minimum 12-week commitment is expected (schedules may be adjusted with prior discussions with the Volunteer Coordinator).

Adult volunteers are required to purchase a volunteer shirt at $10.

Those seeking a shorter-term commitment, or a one-time opportunity on behalf of a service group, should contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 765-807-1540 for Group Volunteer and Special Event Volunteer opportunities.

Are you an energetic and committed individual who is looking to share your interest in animals with others? Volunteer Educators assist the Education Department by assisting with various learning experiences including animal encounters, group presentations and patron interactions throughout the zoo. We are looking for individuals who can make at least a year-long commitment.
