From the Chief's Desk

Welcome to the online home of the Lafayette Police Department. As Chief of Police, I am honored to serve the City of Lafayette and the Greater Lafayette community. Each day I am blessed to work alongside the outstanding men and women, sworn personnel and civilian staff, who are the foundation of this department. Policing in Lafayette is a rewarding opportunity and we are dedicated to providing excellent service. In order to deliver exceptional service to our residents, businesses, and visitors, it is imperative that we foster interdependent relationships, sharing information and interacting in a collaborative approach to maintaining public safety. The Lafayette Police Department is focused on proactive community partnerships aimed at providing the best solutions and positive outcomes for problems we face as a community. Fighting crime and creating a safe environment is our highest priority. We cannot do it alone and that is why we cherish the relationship we have with the Lafayette community. Sir Robert Peel, the father of modern policing described the importance of this relationship this way when, in 1829 he said:

"The police are the public, the public are the police. The police are the only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties that are incumbent upon every citizen in the interest of community welfare and existence."

This concept is as true today as it was in 1829. While technology has provided the foundation for tremendous leaps in the quality of lives we all enjoy, it has also created gaps in our collective sense of community. Society is "wired" in ways now that many of us never could have imagined. It is important to remember that in order to maintain the high quality of life we all enjoy in Lafayette we must take the time to connect person to person, neighbor to neighbor, and neighborhood to neighborhood to keep it that way. We, the members of the Lafayette Police Department, genuinely believe that through interpersonal interactions we can maintain the highest community standards, and we are proud to do our part. As Chief of Police, I am committed to developing innovative approaches to collaborate with our community so that we can share information in meaningful ways. We will continue to use technology in our crime fighting strategy to maximize our efforts and resources. We are utilizing social media, among other means, to stay connected to those we serve and to get them valuable information in a timely, efficient manner. We will continue to seek opportunities to gain efficiencies and improve service through shared resources within our City departments, as well as with our area law enforcement partners. I strongly encourage all community members to participate in the process by utilizing services such as Nixle, Twitter, Nextdoor - City of Lafayette, Facebook, as well as We-Tip and our traditional service lines.
