In 1978 School Liaison Officer Pat Hughes conducted a safety Campaign, and asked local youngsters to appoint their favorite animal star as a symbol. As a result Safety See-More became the mascot of the campaign. Kermit the Frog of The Muppet Show reached out and congratulated Officer Pat and the children on thinking up such a great name for Safety See-more, Kermit's cousin on the Lafayette Police Force.
The campaign was so successful that on July 5th, 1978 Mayor James F. Riehle created this special award and Kermit was issued badge No. 46 as an honorary member of the Lafayette Police Department. The Muppet Fan Club Newsletter wrote of the event in its newsletter. Numerous news papers across the country also published stories about Kermit the Kop in Lafayette, IN.
