At approximately 6:20pm, Lafayette Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a male had jumped into the Wabash River from the Harrison Street Bridge. Officers from the Lafayette Police Department arrived and observed a male facedown in the river. The male periodically would surface and then submerge and appeared to be unconscious. Officers observed the direction the male was travelling down the Wabash River and were able to position themselves at a location on the west bank where they reached the male and assisted him to shore. The West Lafayette Police and West Lafayette Fire Department also immediately arrived and assisted.
The male subject was evaluated on scene by medics for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the fall. The male was then transported to local hospital and is receiving ongoing treatment. From the investigation it was determined that the male’s actions were an intentional act to harm himself by jumping off the bridge.
