On January 1st, at approximately 10:30 am, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to Sagamore Pky N, just north of Union Street, to investigate a personal injury crash. When officers arrived, they found a 2006 Nissan 4-door on its side. The driver, 21 year-old Ismael Rivera Tapia, was still inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Lafayette Fire Department. He was then transported to St Elizabeth East hospital and later transferred to St Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he remains in critical condition.
Due to the severity of the crash, Lafayette Police Traffic Unit crash reconstruction investigation team responded. The investigation is ongoing.
