Suspicious Incident Report - Update

Around 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 18th, officers responded to a suspicious incident complaint at the Melbourne Road and Dearborn Street intersection.  A witness reported to officers a white female, 17 – 18 years old, wearing a green t-shirt and tan shorts was physically coaxed into the back of a passenger car.  The car reportedly then sped away. There were no other witnesses or and no additional information to develop lead information.

Today, May 19th, a man and wife came forward after hearing the news reports and identified they were the two people involved in the incident at Melbourne Road and Dearborn Street last evening.   Detectives followed up with the couple, who were not from the area, and learned the female had been experiencing a medical condition and walked away from the Payless on Greenbush.

The husband drove the area to search for his wife, who he located and put his arm around to get into the car.  There was no complaint of domestic abuse or sign of injury on either person interviewed.  The couple apologized for the misunderstanding.

The police thank the public and the media for the swift attention to this incident.  The Lafayette Police also thank the couple for calling to clarify the situation.
