[ARCHIVED] S 18th SWAT Incident

For Immediate Release: Contact: Sgt M Brown
765 807-1200
Date: 06-27-2015
Lafayette Police Officers responded to a residence on the 300 block of S 18th St, reference a report that a male had forcibly entered the home, armed himself with a large kitchen knife, injured himself and threatened to injure the occupants. When officers first arrived on scene they confronted the armed male, who retreated back into home. The male then barricaded the door by stacking furniture behind the door, preventing officers from making entry.
Officers attempted to speak with the male but were unsuccessful. Lafayette SWAT and the Lafayette Crisis/Negotiation Team responded to the scene. Negotiators attempted to speak with the male on his cell phone, but he refused to answer. SWAT members introduced a “Throw Phone” through a window, so that negotiators could speak with him. He refused to answer that phone as well.
After all attempts to negotiate with the male had failed, SWAT deployed gas into the house. The male was taken into custody a few minutes later.
Cartilus Walters was arrested for Burglary, Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon, Resisting Law Enforcement, and two outstanding warrants. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds.
The fact a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
