Lafayette Police Shooting Review Board Findings

On January 27^th, 2020 the Lafayette Police Department convened a shooting review board to determine if the officer involved shooting that occurred on January 20^th, 2020 was within department policy.  The shooting review board subsequently determined that Officer Nathan Stoneking acted within Lafayette Police Department Policy and followed departmental training standards.

At about 2:13pm on 1-20-2020, Lafayette Police Officers responded to a 911 call of a man with a gun at the intersection of South 23^rd Street and State Street. It was later determined that Dustin Furr made the 911 call to the Lafayette Police Department; reporting himself as currently standing at the corner of South 23^rd Street and State Street with a loaded handgun. 

Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter and located Furr standing on the northeast corner of the intersection of 23^rd St and State St.  Officer Jeremy Kennedy was among the first to arrive and, as he was approaching on foot, Furr pointed a handgun at Officer Kennedy.  Officer Kennedy and other officers began trying to negotiate with Furr in an attempt to get him to surrender. After negotiating with Furr for approximately 11 minutes, Furr walked in the direction of Officer Kennedy and raised his handgun to shoulder level and pointed it at Officer Kennedy. At that time, Officer Nathan Stoneking fired his rifle twice, striking Furr two times. Officers, Fire and Emergency Medical personnel attempted life-saving efforts, but Furr died at the scene.

Lafayette Police Department’s criminal investigation into the matter has also concluded and will be turned over to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office. While the criminal case continues to be under review, no further case facts or camera footage will be released. Subsequent to the findings made by the LPD’s shooting review board, Officer Stoneking has been released from administrative leave and will return to normal patrol duties immediately.
