Lafayette Police Shooting Review Board Findings

On April 27th, 2020 the Lafayette Police Department convened a shooting review board to determine if the officer involved shooting that occurred on April 21st, 2020 was within department policy.  The shooting review board determined that Officers Khoury Elias and Israel Salazar acted within Lafayette Police Department Policy and followed departmental training standards.

On April 21st, 2020 officers were investigating a domestic disturbance in the 800 block of N 7th St, Lafayette, IN.  When officers arrived they met with the female complainant who advised that her boyfriend, Trevor Bowie (29) had left prior to officer’s arrival.  Bowie was alleged to have stolen a handgun from the complainant when he left.

Officers were provided with a description of Bowie and began checking the area for him.  Bowie was located nearby and a foot pursuit ensued.  During the foot pursuit Bowie pointed a handgun at officers in the parking lot of 629 N 6th St, Lafayette, IN.  Lafayette Police officers Khoury Elias, and Officer Israel Salazar fired their department issued handguns, striking Bowie. Bowie has since been released from the hospital and is incarcerated at the Tippecanoe County Jail.

Lafayette Police Department’s criminal investigation into the matter has also concluded and has been turned over to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office.  While the criminal case continues to be under review, no further case facts or camera footage will be released.  Subsequent to the findings made by the LPD’s shooting review board, Officer Khoury Elias and Officer Israel Salazar will return to normal patrol duties immediately.
