Arrest Made in Shooting Incident
Around 2:30 AM on March 20th the Lafayette Police Department received an emergency call stating a female had been shot in the area of South 24th Street and Brice Street. The reporting party was driving to an area hospital with the female victim in the vehicle when the call to police was made. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Davyn Nichols of West Lafayette, arrived at the hospital and was treated for a gunshot wound. The victim currently remains in the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Yesterday, March 22nd, Lafayette Police arrested 25-year-old Alain K. Powell in connection to the shooting at South 24th and Brice Street. Powell was arrested for Aggravated Battery, Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Recklessness.
Through investigative leads, police developed a Powell as a suspect and discovered he had an outstanding warrant through California and was arrested. Since Powell has been in the Tippecanoe County jail, LPD detectives collected case facts and evidence and were able to make a probable cause arrest on Powell for the shooting.
Detectives continue to investigate the matter and work to determine the motive for the shooting. The case will be turned over to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutors office to review for charges. Anyone with information about this matter is asked to contact the Lafayette Police Department at 765-807-1200 or the anonymous We-Tip Hotline at (800) 78-CRIME.
